“… women love their father’s odour… you smell like onion…”
– Xu Jinglei in My Father and I

My Father and I is the first feature by the well-known young actor Xu Jinglei. She is both the image of China on the move – where women are becoming trendsetters in business, finance and culture – and the muse of its contemporary cinema, which is quickly metabolizing and mirroring social changes, shifting focus from past icons of beauty and submission to a new generation of Chinese women. These highly professional, consummate storytellers of new-found independence are capable – as in Xu’s case – of dwelling with the same ease both in front of and behind the camera.

Urbane and subtle, My Father and I cuts with surgical precision into the tormented, controversial relationship between a daughter and her unusual father to discover how the “genetic” fact of love is often tainted – but also reinforced – by life’s unexpected events. Jing’s (Xu) mother dies in a car accident, leaving the lonely teenager to deal with the absence of a father (renowned director Ye Daying in his acting debut) who now spends his life gambling and drinking in smoky bars, shady business being his only source of income. This misfit could not love his wife in the expected, respectable fashion, but his affection for his family has always been the unacknowledged centre of his maladjusted life. Left with the memory of a wife and mother, father and daughter – though often incapable of admitting their mutual need – look to each other for comfort, stumble and fall, grow intimate and distant.

The film is characterized by a surprising maturity and innovative, oblique narrative texture. Keeping most of the action offscreen, it focuses on a detailed chronicle of simple, daily evidence of love, effectively exploring the contrasting emotions that transpire from small conversations and minute gestures. Unpretentious and complex, My Father and I leans on Xu’s solid script and convincing performances. This film is a small, multi-faceted gem of intimate wisdom.

Xu Jinglei is from mainland China and studied at the Beijing Film Academy. She is well known as an actor, having come into the public eye primarily in the television series “Spicy Love Soup.” She appeared in the films The Storm Riders (98) and Dazzling (01), then went on to perform in Spring Subway (02), I Love You (02) and Far From Home (03), which were popular successes in China and were screened in several countries around the world. My Father and I (02) is the first feature film she has directed.
