Denver, CO (September 16, 2002) The 25th Starz Denver International Film Festival (DIFF), which takes place October 10-20, 2002 has announced that it will present a “Salute to Chinese Cinema” as its annual spotlight on a country or region during this year’s event. To bring the featured Chinese films to the festival, DIFF partnered with Encore International (EI), the China arm of Liberty Media, and China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), which oversees the film industry in the PRC. The “Salute to Chinese Cinema” will officially kick off on Friday, October 11 with a press conference and an Opening Gala event, which will include appearances by several of the Salute’s stars and directors, as well as officials from SARFT. The announcement was made today by Ron Henderson, director of the Denver International Film Festival.
“For the first time in our 25 year history, we are shining the spotlight on China, a country that has become an increasingly important contributor to the film world,” noted Henderson. “With the help of our friends at Encore International, we have amassed a group of fantastic films that we are very proud to premiere here in the United States at our festival. It may be one of the only places you’ll be able to see these films the way they should be seen – in a theatre and on the big screen. We thank Michelle Sie Whitten and Encore International, as well as China’s SARFT for making this extraordinary event possible.”
“China’s contributions to the film community have certainly grown in the past few years and filmmakers there are now starting to meet with international acclaim, thanks to the film festival circuit,” said Michelle Sie Whitten, president and CEO, Encore International. “With this year’s ‘Salute to Chinese Cinema,’ DIFF is providing an excellent forum to showcase some remarkable films. At Encore International, one of our goals is to promote better cultural understanding between our two countries, so we are very pleased to be sponsoring this event, as well as hosting the delegation of Chinese directors, actors and SARFT officials who will be in Denver next month.”
Members of the Chinese delegation attending the press conference and Opening Gala held at the King Center on Friday, October 11 will be Wu Ke, deputy director general of the Film Bureau, SARFT; Feng Xiaoning, director of GADA MEILIN; E.
