Fantastic! There's also a Japanese version of the Monkey Legend fromthe 1960's. The one I saw was dubbed by Frankie Avalon & JonathanWinters. Not so authentic as this clip, but just as colorful and WEIRD!

Is there no way to get subtitles, though, for non-chinese speakers? It'd be awesome if americans could watch this too. I'm guessing you'rechinese and can speak/write it? Is it you don't want to do subs, ordon't know how to?

must look up the meaning of the word irony some day
(sorry Quest!)
By the way, great thread. I’ve been thinking about how to get this film too, but not in Swedish of course.

"Kung Markatta"
I wonder, either this movie is exceptionally good or everything elsein TV back then was simply so crap that it just had to stand out. Itwas back in the days of the Swedish TV monopoly with only two channelson and cartoons was an exceptional rarity.
Frankly I think it was just so exceptionally good.
I’ve watched this movie as well and according to David’s chronology Iwas at most 5 and a half years old. However I remember some of it. Inaddition to what already have been said, I should say that I reallyliked the music in this movie. Very, traditionally Chinese in myuneducated ears, and very neat, good at setting the mood. Also likedthe animations, nice colors, and the story was cool. This monkey tookcrap from noone and he fought the Gods even. That he himself was somesort of divine being I don’t think I got when I watched it. He also hadthis fighting staff which he shrank and hid inside his ear when notusing. All in all a great movie.

Monkey King
Ijust watched my Swedish video of Monkey King, it’s been 24 years sinceI saw it the last time. And it’s clear to me that things has changedsince then. Animations is pretty ok, nothing more. The quality of therecording is bad, but the worst thing is the horrible dubbing. There’sonly one voice, more like a narrator, after the dialogue between thecharacters is finished the narrator explains (short version so tospeak)in Swedish what was said, not very entertaining. Still I like thestory very much. I would love to see a remastered subtitled or properlyEnglish dubbed version on DVD someday.

Me too
A french guy experienced exactly the same :
i saw Monkey King about 20 years ago and, still, I’m searching for videotapes or dvds. Great, great memories.
To sum up, at present, none of us has found a proper version? Namely, with english (or french ) subtitles ?????

Thank heavens, I am NOT ALONE.
More people here that loves a movie which is so wonderful, but totally impossible to get!!
Unbelievable.
If ANYONE knows WHERE I can get this movie, I prefer ORIGINAL language (Mandarin) with English Subtitles.
Seen it twice on TV, somewhere around 1980.
One time on Dutch TV, and one time on the BBC.
I didn’t have a VCR back then, and that’s a damn pity.
Haven’t seen an animation movie that was better....
And I’ve seen quite a few in my lifetime.
Please YELL if you know something.
I’ve written the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands to get a fax or e-mail address from the Shanghai Animation Film Studio.
It’s quite strange that they this movie isn’t on DVD yet. sherill@lycos.nl

thanks, laolee, I’m still looking for it.
Too bad it’s just chinese subs, it would have been so easy for them toinclude english subtitles. But thanks anyway, I’ll e-mail them aquestion when/if they expect an international release.
nice DVD cover by the way.

I just watched this this week and really enjoyed, even without Englishsubs. One thing, though, according to the bcdb.com entry, the originalrunning time was 120 minutes, this version is about 85 minutes. Did notnotice except the ending was possibly trimmed. Otherwise, fantastic!
Another plus that I didn’t realize is that the disc also includes the1941 b/w film Princess Iron Fan about 75 minutes long. What a greatunexpected bonus.
The monkey’s story is not merely an animated film a Swedish boy camecross in his childhood. He’s very hot and even presents some key valuesof our culture. I’m making a new thread because I wrote it a little bitlong.

Even in Venezuela somebody saw that movie
But I think I was the only one who had it! My father recorded it onBETAMAX (yes.. BETAMAX!) and I looooved that film. I saw it with theoriginal sound and a narrator in spanish, but now im looking for iteither in english or spanish, preferebly subtitled.
I knownobody has posted anything in here for a few months, but if you haveany information that might help me, that would be great!
Ithink I’m the only person in Venezuela and maybe latinoamerica that hasseen that movie, or at least still remembers about it.
got it at long last
at yesasia. BUT unfortunately without English subtitles.
But great altogether to see this superb movie again...

Re: Uproar in Heaven, Monkey King, animated film (please help)
you can now find a fan-subbed version with English subtitles here,
Safe place to order from. I have bought several Japanese movies from that place.

Re: Uproar in Heaven, Monkey King, animated film (please help)
I’d say it’s a safe bet that the fan-subbed DVD mentioned above usesthe subtitles provided on my wiki (translated by a chinese guy, editedby me). I actually don’t mind, but the price is outrageous. You canstill get a DVD with English subtitles on http://asiandvdclub.org, sodon’t bother paying for it.

Re: Uproar in Heaven, Monkey King, animated film (please help)
I realize it’s been quite a while since the original post, but I just joined this forum, so I couldn’t post sooner.
This is indeed a beautiful animation. I hope English subtitling doessomething to increase the awareness of this wonderful video.
I have good news for anyone interested in this topic:
The DVD you’re seeking has been reworked with English subtitles and is to be released very soon, if it hasn’t already been.
My friend who arranged to have the subtitling done told me on Friday that the English-subtitled DVD has been completed.
I was fortunate to have had the opportunity of working with thecharming lady (Windy Shum) who did the translation of this film’sscript into English, making suggestions on grammar and usage.
I’m very anxious to get my hands on a copy as you are, so I will letyou know what I learn about availability as soon as I know anything.

Re: Uproar in Heaven, Monkey King, animated film (please help)
English subtitles for this movie has been around for a long time, asyou will know if you read this thread. What I would like to know iswhat the source of the video is on any newer releases. The DVD releasesfrom China are missing a few minutes here and there, which is a realshame.
